Charging Your EV at Hotels and Destinations

Destination charging at hotels, resorts, and attractions lets you wake up full. Here's how to find and use it on your travels.

Some of the most convenient charging happens while you sleep or sightsee. Destination charging — Level 2 chargers at hotels, resorts, restaurants, and attractions — can make road trips dramatically smoother by letting you start each day with a full battery.

What destination charging is

Destination chargers are typically Level 2 units installed where you'll park for a while: hotel lots, resort garages, wineries, parks, and shopping areas. They're not about speed; they're about charging "for free" (timewise) while you do something else.

Why it's a road-trip superpower

If your overnight hotel has charging, the math changes completely:

  • You arrive, plug in, and wake up full — no morning fast-charging stop needed.
  • Your first leg of the day is your longest, with the most range available.
  • You save money, since Level 2 is cheaper than DC fast charging (and hotel charging is sometimes complimentary).

A hotel with chargers can be worth choosing over a slightly nicer one without.

How to find it

When booking travel, treat charging as an amenity to search for:

  • Look for hotels that advertise EV charging.
  • Check how many stalls and what connector — a single Tesla-only unit may not help a CCS car without an adapter.
  • Confirm whether it's free, paid, or guest-only.

Using it well

  • Plug in on arrival so you get a full session overnight.
  • Don't camp if stalls are limited — move your car once it's full so other guests can charge (basic etiquette).
  • Have a backup in case the hotel's charger is occupied or down — know a nearby public option.

Beyond hotels

Destination charging shows up in lots of places worth a stop: museums, trailhead parking, downtown garages, and shopping centers. If you're going to be somewhere for an hour or more, it's worth checking for a charger you can use while you're there.

Plan it into your trip

The best road trips weave destination charging into the itinerary so you fast charge less and arrive places topped up.
