Public vs Home Charging: What's Right for You?

Should you rely on home charging, public charging, or both? Compare cost, convenience, and speed to build a routine that fits your life.

One of the first questions new EV owners ask is how they'll actually keep the car charged. The answer usually involves a mix of home and public charging — but the right balance depends on where you live and how you drive.

Home charging: the default for most

If you can charge at home, it changes everything. You plug in at night and wake up "full," skipping gas stations entirely.

  • Level 1 (wall outlet): works for low-mileage drivers but is slow.
  • Level 2 (installed charger): the sweet spot — replenishes a full day's driving overnight.

Pros: cheapest electricity (especially on overnight rates), maximum convenience, no waiting. Cons: requires a parking spot with power; Level 2 installation has an upfront cost.

Public charging: for trips and top-ups

Public charging fills the gaps home charging can't:

  • DC fast charging for road trips and quick range when you're out.
  • Level 2 at workplaces, shopping centers, hotels, and street parking.

Pros: fast options available, no installation needed, essential for travel. Cons: usually more expensive than home, occasionally occupied or unreliable.

What if you can't charge at home?

Plenty of people own EVs without a home charger — apartment dwellers, street parkers, condo owners. The playbook:

  • Find a reliable Level 2 charger near home or work to use regularly.
  • Use DC fast charging strategically for quick fills.
  • Take advantage of free or destination charging where you already spend time.

We cover this in depth in apartment and condo EV charging.

Cost comparison

Home charging is typically the cheapest per mile, especially on time-of-use rates. DC fast charging is the most expensive but buys you speed and freedom. Many drivers do ~80–90% of charging at home and use public charging for the rest. For the full math, see how much it costs to charge an EV.

Build a routine, then forget about it

The goal is a routine you don't have to think about: charge cheaply where you park most, and use a good app to find fast, reliable stops when you travel. ChargeScout makes the "when you travel" part easy by ranking the best public chargers near you or along your route.
