The dream: driving on sunshine
If you generate solar power and use it to charge your EV, your marginal cost per mile can approach zero. You've already paid for the panels; the electrons are free. For high-mileage drivers especially, that's a compelling proposition.
How solar charging actually works
There are a few models, depending on your setup and utility:
Charge directly from solar (daytime)
If your car is home during the day, you can charge while the sun is up, using solar production directly. This maximizes self-consumption of your own power.
Net metering
If your utility offers net metering, excess solar you export earns credits that offset grid power you draw later — including overnight charging. Effectively, you "bank" sunshine to use when you charge at night.
Solar + home battery
A home battery stores daytime solar to use at night, letting you charge the car after dark on stored sunshine rather than grid power. It adds cost but increases independence and can pair well with time-of-use rates.
The timing puzzle
The catch is that solar peaks midday while many cars charge at night. Bridging that gap is what net metering or a home battery solves. If you can charge midday (work-from-home, weekends), direct solar charging is simplest.
Stacking with off-peak rates
Even without solar covering everything, combining modest solar with off-peak charging drives your effective cost per mile very low. Charge from solar or stored solar when you can, and fill the rest during the cheapest grid hours.
Is it worth it?
Solar economics depend on your local sunshine, electricity prices, incentives, and how many miles you drive. The more you drive, the faster solar-charged miles pay back.
