Understanding EV Charging Networks: EA, EVgo, ChargePoint & Tesla
Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, and Tesla each work differently. Compare coverage, pricing, payment, and reliability to charge with confidence.
Public charging isn't one system — it's a patchwork of networks, each with its own app, pricing, and quirks. Knowing the major players helps you understand what to expect when you pull up.
Tesla / Supercharger
Tesla's Supercharger network is widely regarded as the most reliable and extensive DC fast-charging network in North America, using the NACS connector. It's increasingly open to non-Tesla EVs (with NACS or an adapter).
- Strengths: reliability, coverage, simple plug-and-charge experience.
- Watch for: some sites are still Tesla-only; check access before relying on one.
Electrify America
Electrify America runs high-power CCS stations (up to 350 kW) often located near retail and highways, making it a road-trip staple for non-Tesla EVs.
- Strengths: high power, many highway corridors.
- Watch for: reliability varies by site; check recent reviews.
EVgo
EVgo focuses on urban and metro DC fast charging, frequently at grocery stores and shopping centers.
- Strengths: convenient city locations.
- Watch for: power levels and pricing vary; some sites are lower-power.
ChargePoint
ChargePoint is less a single network and more a platform — many Level 2 and some DC stations run on ChargePoint hardware, operated by businesses, workplaces, and municipalities.
- Strengths: huge footprint of Level 2 destination charging.
- Watch for: pricing and access are set by each site host, so they vary widely.
Payment differs by network
Some networks want their app, some accept tap-to-pay credit cards, and some support Plug & Charge, where the car authenticates automatically when you plug in. We cover this in how payment works at public chargers.
Don't memorize networks — compare stations
The practical reality is you'll use whatever network has a fast, available, well-priced charger near you. Rather than loyalty to one network, focus on the station: connector, speed, availability, price, and reliability. ChargeScout shows the network on every listing but ranks by what actually matters for your stop — so you pick the best charger regardless of who runs it. For pricing, see how much it costs to charge.
