What Is a CCS Combo Plug?
CCS is the DC fast-charging standard for most non-Tesla EVs in North America. Here's how the combo plug works and how it compares to NACS.
If you drive a non-Tesla EV that isn't brand-new, there's a good chance your fast-charging port is CCS. Here's what that means and why the "combo" in the name is the key to understanding it.
"Combined" charging in one port
CCS stands for Combined Charging System. The design is clever: it takes the standard J1772 AC plug and adds two large DC pins beneath it. The result is a single port that handles:
- AC charging (Level 1 and Level 2) through the J1772 portion.
- DC fast charging through the added DC pins.
So one car port does everything — slow home charging and high-power fast charging — using the appropriate connector for each.
Where you'll use it
CCS has been the dominant DC fast-charging standard for most non-Tesla EVs in North America, used by brands like Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, VW, BMW, and many others. Fast-charging networks like Electrify America and EVgo built extensive CCS infrastructure.
- Typical power: commonly 150–350 kW at modern stations.
- AC side: the J1772 portion tops out around 19 kW.
CCS vs NACS
The industry is transitioning toward NACS (Tesla's connector, now an open standard), which is smaller and also combines AC and DC into one plug. Here's the short version:
- CCS: larger plug, huge existing network, standard on many current EVs.
- NACS: smaller plug, Supercharger access, increasingly standard on new EVs.
For the next several years, both coexist, and adapters bridge the two. If you have a CCS car, a CCS-to-NACS adapter unlocks Tesla Superchargers. Learn more in what is NACS and do I need a NACS adapter.
The practical takeaway
If your car is CCS, you have access to a vast fast-charging network today, and adapters extend your reach to NACS stations. When you're searching for a stop, the connector filter is your friend — set your plug in ChargeScout and it ranks CCS-compatible stations (and adapter-reachable ones) at the top.
