How to Read an EV Charging Station Listing
Connector, power, network, pricing, hours, access — a station listing is packed with info. Here's how to decode it before you drive over.
A good charging app packs a lot into each station listing. If you know how to read those fields at a glance, you can decide in seconds whether a charger is worth the drive.
The fields that matter most
Connector type
The single most important field. It tells you whether the station physically fits your car — NACS, CCS, CHAdeMO, or J1772. If your plug isn't listed (and you don't have an adapter), move on.
Charging level and max power
- Level tells you the category: DC fast, Level 2, or Level 1.
- Max power (kW) tells you the ceiling speed. Remember it's a maximum, not a guarantee — your car and battery state determine the real rate.
Number of charging points
A station with eight stalls is far less likely to leave you waiting than one with a single plug. More points = better odds of an open spot.
Network
The operator — Tesla, Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, and others. The network affects pricing, payment method, and reliability. See our networks overview.
Pricing
Stations charge per kWh, per minute, or per session, and some are free. Per-kWh is the fairest to compare. Watch for idle fees that kick in if you leave your car plugged in after charging finishes.
Hours and access
Some chargers sit in garages that close, behind gates, or in lots reserved for customers. "24/7 public" is the gold standard; "customers only" or limited hours can ruin a late-night plan.
Signals of reliability
Beyond the spec sheet, look for:
- Real-time availability — how many stalls are open right now.
- Recent reviews — drivers will tell you if stalls are broken or slow.
- A reliability score — crowd-sourced "did it work?" check-ins reveal whether a station actually delivers.
Don't skip the mini map
A quick look at the station's location tells you if it's easy to pull into, near amenities, or tucked behind a building. One-tap directions to Apple or Google Maps save you from circling.
